Miracles of the Mind: How to Use the Power of Your Mind for Healing and Prosperity
Published in Paperback by Rainbow Books, Inc. (October, 1998)
Authors: Byron Gentry and Mary Gentry
Average review score:

Breakthrough Book
This book is immediately helpful! After reading through a very interesting life story of the author, the book outlines simple details of THE TOOL. Using THE TOOL has helped me to clear up a sinus condition the very first time I tried it !

His life story details his progress towards creating THE TOOL in a scientific manner.. hypothosis followed by experiment leading to conclusion. Definetely recommended reading for anybody willing to stretch the bounds of healing and reality manifestation.

A truly inspiring story of personal triumph.
I was deeply inspired at reading Byron Gentry's biography, and about the self-help work he discovered and developed. This book empowers readers to quickly, simply, and painlessly make positive changes in their lives.

Easily understood by beginners interested in mental healing.
Dr. & Mrs. Gentry have condensed years of research and development into a concise methodology that even beginners can follow. I have used his methods for the past five years--they are failsafe. Especially useful is his method for energizing compatibility between two or more people. I have used his beacon method to bring to my practice just the right clientele whom I can help, are interested in my work, can benefit from it, can pay for it and who can refer other clients to me. His life story is very interesting. Dr. & Mrs. Gentry continue to do research. The key to do what they do is to practice, practice, practice! Mental healing takes energy and preciseness, conviction and intention. As he teaches, most of us spend too much time being angry--we waste vital energy. We need to take the energy we conjure up when angry & turn it and ourselves into positive energy to heal. Angry energy might as well be a shot gun. Healing energy is the miracle! It's free and abundant--everyone can manifest it.

The Mud Fox
Published in Paperback by Four Seasons Publishers (01 January, 2002)
Author: Robert C. Powers
Average review score:

Another "must read" for students of riverine warfare.
Robert C. Powers has established himself as the ultimate authority on Viet Nam riverine warfare, a dimension of the Southeast Asia war that's not been documented very completely. THE MUD FOX picks-up where QUESTER leaves off....and it's another page turner. I read this book in a single sitting on a cross country flight....it's action packed, engaging and tough to put down once you begin. Powers writes with the clear authority of one who's been there as he describes Viet Nam and its maze of rivers and canals. We meet again the main characters from QUESTER as well as some intriguing new ones in this work. The combat scenes are vivid and realistic and there's enough factual detail to keep this book believable and historically accurate. THE MUD FOX is a winner and I recommend it highly!

Even better than QUESTER--can't wait for the movie
I read Powers' last novel, QUESTER, and thoroughly enjoyed the factual description of the Vietnam river war. MUD FOX is even better! It reads like a Tom Clancy novel in its descriptive style. The difference for me was I understood ALL of what Powers was describing since I was one of those reckless souls who patrolled the Vietnam rivers on Swift Boats with just as reckless and dedicated crew members. The book is fast paced and takes some really unexpected turns--never a dull moment. I started my read and couldn't put MUD FOX down until I had finished it. The characters and the locales are really believable. I thought QUESTER was great, MUD FOX is even better! If you haven't had the hair on the back of your neck stand out straight lately, give this book a try'you'll like it a lot! Highly recommended. Can't wait for the movie.

An action packed page turner with a great love story!
"THE MUD FOX, Ghost of the Jungle" is the sequel to "QUESTER, A Story of the River Warriors". QUESTER is a top notch romantic action novel. THE MUD FOX is as good or better! It is based on real operations (OPERATION SEA FLOAT) and events in the Nam Cam Forest during the Vietnam war. The Mud Fox is a different, spellbinding character. As you read, you become the Mud Fox as he fights his way through the jungle and pursues his love. The romance between the Mud Fox and Brenda McAllister is rough, emotional and tender at the same time. Descriptions of the mangrove jungle will have you swatting at the bugs as you read! The action scenes are realistic, dramatic and frequent. There is never a dull moment. The book starts with a bang and ends with a bigger bang. You'll never forget the haunting, action packed surprise ending! A real page turner!

A Nation Within a Nation: Amiri Baraka (Leroi Jones) and Black Power Politics
Published in Hardcover by Univ of North Carolina Pr (February, 1999)
Author: K. Komozi Woodard
Average review score:

This is a must read for all interested in politics and race
Woodard writes about the relationship of black power, black cultural arts, and the black nationalist movement with LeRoi Jones, later Amiri Baraka, one of its main supporters. ... He concludes that Black America requires an ideological and political arsenal of both nationalism and Marxism. But at no time can the emphasis be purely Marxist or nationalist without doing damage to the black community. In other words, sectarianism is the enemy of black liberation and the fight for equality. This is a must read for all interested in politics and race in the U.S. Recommended for undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty. -- P. Barton-Kriese, Indiana University East, Choice July/August 1999

The most important book on Black Power Movement
Professor Peniel Joseph writes that, "Historian Komozi Woodard's `A Nation Within A Nation' ... stands out as the most important book to be written about the Black Power Movement. `A Nation Within A Nation' is really several books rolled into one. First, it is a well-researched and painstakingly detailed case study of the dramatic consequences of Black Power politics on [the] racial and political dynamics of Newark, New Jersey during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Second, it is a political biography that underscores the significance of Amiri Baraka to the Black Power Movement's rise and eventual decline in American politics. Third, the book explores the transformation of black cultural nationalism during the Black Power era and Baraka's pivotal role in contemporizing black nationalism as an expressive political and cultural vehicle. Finally, it's a study of the divese and complex matrix that produced black political thought and practice during the period; a historical interrogation of the national and international implications of radical anti-colonial discourses that undergirded Black Power politics."

One of the most comprehensive studies of black nationalism.
According to Publishers Weekly, "Woodard examines the role of poet Amiri Baraka's `cultural politics' on Black Power and black nationalism in the 1960s. After a brief overview of the evolution of black nationalism since slavery, he focuses on activities in Northeastern urban centers (Baraka's milieus were Newark, NJ, and, to a lesser extent, New York City). Taking issue with scholars who see cultural nationalism as self-destructive, Woodard finds it "fundamental to the endurance of the Black Revolt from the 1960s into the 1970s." California Senator Tom Hayden, says: "The fascinating story of a struggle that nearly succeeded in creating self-determination in the urban ghetto" And, in Professor Robin D.G. Kelley's assessment, the book "will be one of the most important studies of black urban politics and culture in the postwar period." As far as Professor Michael B. Katz is concerned, it "breaks new ground and revises standard interpretations of the era. I am particularly impressed with the way he has connected political mobilization to movements in the arts, literature, and intellectual life, on the one hand, and to the restructuring of American life, on the other. It's a hardheaded, unflinching analysis, and he tells it well and with great feeling." Finally, Professor John Dittmer found it "Balanced and moving." "It should be required reading ... for all citizens who care about the problems of race and class in urban America. ... quite simply, one of the most important books we have on the black urban experience in the twentieth century ... by one of the leading scholars of the African American experience in this country." The book concludes that there have been five distinct phases in the history of black nationality formation in the U.S. The first phase was the ethnogenesis of African Americans during slavery; that established the social and cultural foundations of Black America. The second was the black nationalism that flowered before the Civil War among free Blacks in the urban North. A third phase resulted from the failure of the Civil War and Reconstruction to guarantee full citizenship for African Americans; under racial oppression and Jim Crow segregation, a subject nation developed in the Black Belt areas of the South. The most vivid example of that phase of nationality formation was the great Kansas Exodus. The fourth phase of black nationality formation resulted from the Great Migration of perhaps 1.5 million African Americans and from the development of large, compact, black concentrations in the ghettos of America; the flowering of that nationalism is seen in the Garvey Movement of the 1920s. And finally, a fifth stage of nationality formation ensued from the migration of 4 million Black Americans form the South between 1940 and 1970 and the development of dozens of "second ghettos," that generated hundreds of urban uprisings during the 1960s; that sense of modern nationality was heralded by the Black Power movement and the politics of Black cultural nationalism.

New Moon Astrology: Using New Moon Power Days to Change and Revitalize Your Life

awsome!
Shree miss spiller has done society a great service with this book. My Guru talks a lot about making intentions, putting out the energy for what you want to be or what you want to change. THis book adds a overwhelming aspect to making intentions. THat Is, making them at the best time for getting the energys of the moon and the zodiac and the universe to help you. This is a very powerful combination making wishes on the new moon. The universe is behind you all the way when you do this.It brings the moons energy along with you. There are two things I would recomend though. When I do my wishes I put them in the form of an intention. An intention is more powerful then a wish. Why? An intention is when you put yourself into the wish you are saying clearly this is my intention NOT well this is something I want I hope or WISH it to come true--in other words an intention is more focused and powerful and it has your will behind it instead of just hoping the universe helps you. The second thing I would suggest is to put in a little "if this is ok with you" type of statement mine goes like this--With your grace Gurumayi--then the intention. This way I invoce my Guru's Grace and Shakti. I also start at the top of my wish page with a line like "if any of these wishes are not in tune with the shakti then may the shakti do whats best for me and my sadhana". This way I will not create anymore unwanted karma for myself or go too fast in any area. Of course you can subsitute God,Universe,Jesus for Guru. God bless Jan Spiller! Thank You for this book.

Take Charge- Change your life
This book is a valuable scource of affirmations to change your life. The information about moon nodes provides insight into the way we are wired astrologically. Using the full moon to write down the way we want to change provides a focus and helps us to have faith that change is possible. This has been the greatest year of growth for me

Amazing Accurate!
In my opinion, this is the 2nd best astrology book ever written for those not interested in long and overwhelming charts and complicated descriptions that sometimes tend to ramble, and almost always are very scientifical, and have no..."umph" to them. The first is Jan Spillers other book, Astrology for the soul. Although this book is great, and a cheaper alternative, astrology for the soul seems to have a bit more information. Still, this is great book. It tells you the weakest and best points about your sign, using the North Node astrology (it uses the same astrology signs, but your sign may be different with north nodes than the sign you usually go by -- the sign chart is included in the book). When reading it, I felt as if she was talking specifcally to me, it was almost scary. I'd say it's more accurate than any personal one-on-one tarot or palm reading I've ever recieved. Not only does this book tell you about yourself, it tells you what to do with yourself, it helps you strengthen your weak points and fix your disabbilities. It also includes several different affirmations for your sign, plus a song dedicated to your sign. Make sure to read the descriptions for other signs, as everyone can relate. if even the slightest, to every sign and therefore can benefit from the entire book.
A must read for EVERYONE. Life-changing.

New York's Forgotten Substations: The Power Behind the Subway
Published in Paperback by Princeton Architectural Press (October, 2002)
Author: Christopher Payne
Average review score:

A large audience will find a fascinating account
New York's Forgotten Substations: The Power Behind The Subway is hard to easily categorize this title, but any with an interest in New York history and culture will find this a fascinating topic - and worthy of a visit. The author was introduced to the substations by an official of the NYC Transit Author's Power Department; he photographed and wrote the history of these buildings, and his photos and drawings embellish a little-known side of New York history. A large audience will find a fascinating account here.

Power the underground
In the mid 1980's I worked at an architectural firm on West 27th street in manhattan. The next block south, off the Avenue of the Americas was a parking lot which allowed full view of the buildings facing south on West 26th street. One of these buildings was what I thought of as a power station for the city's subways. It's tall proportions, over scaled archway and cast iron elements always attracted my eye- it was a powerful but anonymous architecture. It had been abandoned and converted to a nightclub when I was able to see the interior, which was fantastic in a minimal way. The soaring height of the main space was spectacular and I remember the ceiling treatment being some simple wood panels set off the existing structure in a grid pattern. It was a treat to experience an adaptive reuse of a building that was no longer needed for its original purpose. At the time I wondered why it was abandoned. I couldn't understand how the subway system could function, on the next block, without the power implied by this building.

Christopher Payne's new book answers this question and reminded me of my experience so many years ago. This handsome volume, one of a series of studies published by Princeton Architectural Press ("Grain Elevators", "Wood Burners", "Bethlehem Steel"), is a fascinating look at a building type that developed from the site specific infrastructure within one city, the power supply for the New York City Subway system. The appeal of this book is its combination of history, personal interest, photography, as-built plans, and hand sketches done by the author. This is a fine example of what is called a typology study, a monograph whose subject is a particular building type or function. Typology studies can be dry affairs loaded with minutia that would appeal only to academic types. This series though, and "Substations" in particular, aims for a broader audience with an abundance of images, clear illustrative drawings, succinct background narrative, and affordable pricing. Although I think the publisher has targeted students with books like these, the general public would be entertained by them as well.

Generally speaking, the Subway system is a fascinating subject. Famous and infamous, it is the largest system in the world and the second oldest (after London). The star of many films, shows and books, it can elicit fear for people not familiar with it, an frustration for many who use it. Legendary for being filthy, noisy and covered with graffiti (for me in the late 70's), it is the most efficient way to get around New York today. Mr. Payne's study takes on an integral part of the system that is completely unknown to the general public.

Although the substations housed power supply for the "third rail" of the subway system, what has always intrigued me, as a former New Yorker and an architect, is the exterior appearance of these silent buildings. Although many of the stations were lavished upon with striking terra cotta and glazed tile ornament, these buildings are just as architecturally important and significant. Their appeal comes from their place within the urban fabric of the city, and how they project a benign presence of a vital infrastructure. Nestled within the city streetscapes, the substations generally were of a modest size and built with quality materials. Their proportions always seem just right. A dead giveaway to their presence was the large centrally located archway (or archways) surrounding the main entry to the building.

One could guess that the size of these archways was related to the equipment housed within, but I had no idea of the massiveness of the transformers. Mr. Payne's photographs of this equipment are beautiful. The square format, luminous black & white tones, and practical compositions make even the most derelict interior (of which there are many), look captivating. The appeal of this book is its combination of history, personal interest, photography, as-built plans, and hand sketches done by the author.

As urban archaeological artifacts, one only hopes that all these structures do not disappear as they are taken "off line". I would think the landmarking significance of these structures is high due to their integration into the streetscape, their symbolism of the transit system, the high quality of the construction, and the reusability of the structure. A book like this will shed light on this building type, perhaps as a group landmark

This is a welcome addition to the series of studies on some unusual building types. I have only minor complaints about this book. I would liked to see more of his hand drawings. These sketches provide a window into what he saw and why he needed to draw certain things. Architectural sketches can be interesting images in themselves. I also wish there was concise appendix list of all the substations with information on construction, location, present use. Mr. Payne makes mention that some substations were either "gutted" or "torn apart" soon after he visited them. Knowing if one of these was the building on West 26th Street would have completed a circle for me.

Beautiful Machinery!
For a softcover book, I was very impressed with the high quality of the photographs, typography, and overall presentation. Of course, this is a product of Princeton Architectural Press, so I would expect nothing less! All their books are very well done (I own several of their other titles).

If you love NYC subway history or technology, industrial archeology, or images of electrical machinery from days gone by, this book if for you. Very unique!

There are small maps showing the locations of the substations of the various IRT, BMT, IND, and elevated lines, photos of the facades of these buildings, and photos of the machinery contained in some of them (including both the functioning and disused substations). The informative text gives a general explanation of a substation, the purpose of each machine, as well as historical information.

I loved all the hints and practicality of this book, it was full of pictures and charts and other resources.

a guide on how to survive a nuclear attack.
This is the first book that I have read, that covers all phases of surviving a nuclear attack. It is the authors view that the chances of a surprise attack has actually increased since the end of of the Cold War. But he clearly shows that it is quit possible to survive an attack. The book is not politically correct, making it enjoyable to read and study.

Opening Up: The Healing Power of Expressing Emotions
Published in Paperback by Guilford Press (08 August, 1997)
Author: James W. Pennebaker
Average review score:

Opening Up
This book is wonderful and easy reading for the just average person. It is filled with information about the inner healing we experience when we journal our most inner thoughts. Thank you for sharing this information.

Scientific validation for the benefits of journaling
Pennebaker's studies of people who wrote about their deepest traumas and hurts demonstrate that expressing feelings is helpful and healing. People who participated in the studies showed improved immune function as measured by doctor visits compared to controls groups who didn't journal or who journaled about daily events and omitted their feelings.

If you've kept a journal and written about what troubles you, you know how much this unloading can improve your mood. It's nice to have someone listen to you, or to have the compassionate attention of a paid therapist who can help you see your patterns. But it's also comforting to know that science has shown that journaling can be a way for you to be your own therapist. In this book, the author shares stories of people and their writing. This is a good book to point to if anyone thinks journaling is just narcissistic scribbling.

~~Joan Mazza, psychotherapist and author of DREAM BACK YOUR LIFE; DREAMING YOUR REAL SELF; WHO'S CRAZY ANYWAY? and 3 books in The Guided Journal Series with Writer's Digest Books/Walking Stick Press.

Open Up "Opening Up"!
Expression of one's deepest thoughts and feelings has long been a staple of psychotherapy. Yet until Dr. James Pennebaker of the University of Texas published the results of his decades-long research program, little was known by the general public about the specific effects of self-disclosure. Dr. Pennebaker shows how writing down your thoughts and feelings (or dictating them into a tape recorder) can improve your physical as well as your mental health. In other words, it is not always necessary to confide in another person to obtain at least some of the benefits of self-expression. However, as the author makes clear, not all forms of self-disclosure are beneficial, and he gives specific guidance on what to do and what to avoid.

Our Power Is That of the Working People (Fidel Castro Speeches Building Socialism in Cuba)
Published in Paperback by Pathfinder Press (May, 1983)
Authors: Fidel Castro and Michael Taber
Average review score:

The Story Of Workers' Democracy In Cuba (Pt. I )
At the beginning of this book, Fidel Castro exclaims to a multitude of cheering Cuban workers and peasants near the beginning of the revolution, " This is democracy !" The democracy of workers power in the factories, shops, and sugar mills and plantations. The democracy of the peasants owning the land they work. The democracy of almost two million Cubans armed and trained by their government to use modern weapons in a people's militia. The democracy that means the workers and farmers not empowered, but IN power. Cuban workers and farmers vote for their representatives, but this book shows that even before those revolutionary institutions were set up, Cubans had more democracy than ever existed here since Radical Reconstruction (from 1865-1877) ! This book also potrays the battle between the geniuine communist leaders around Fidel Castro, Raúl Castro, Che Guevara,et. al. and the pro-Moscow wannabe--capitalist Stalinist bureaucrats. Read the rest in the New International Marxist review # 8 : "Che Guevara, Cuba, and the Road to Socialism" and # 11 " Imperialism's March Toward Fascism and War."

a unique record of Cuba's system
More than twenty speeches and articles, spread out over more than two decades, describe the socialist system Cuba?s workers and farmers are creating. The fight against bureaucracy, the role of labor unions, and Cuba?s electoral system all illustrate the point that the Cuban revolution has produced a power that is deeply democratic.

Vital documents from the Cuban revolution
In the first speech in this book, "This is Democracy!," given to a mass rally on May Day 1960, Cuban leader Fidel Castro discusses the new society that was beginning to be built in revolutionary Cuba after the 1950 overthrow of the U.S.-backed Batista dictatorship. The more than twenty speeches printed here detail the revolutionary course charted by leaders of the Cuban revolution and their response to big challenges along the way, from U.S. and Cuban capitalist attacks, lies and slanders to bureaucratic misleaders that developed within Cuba itself.

Many of the speeches are from the 1970s, difficult years for Cuba given the failure of revolutionary movements elsewhere in Latin America and strong pressure to adapt to the bureaucratic methods and practices of the Soviet Union. I'd recommend reading this along with another book of Fidel's speeches, "Cuba's Internationalist Foreign Policy,"-- that details the worldwide perspective of solidarity and the selfless assistance Cuba gave to others fighting for their freedom at this time.

The last speeches come from the early 1980s, after the worker and peasant revolutions in Nicaragua and Grenada gave new impetus to Cuban revolutionaries. You can see the seeds of the deep-going changes Fidel and the Cuban leadership led forward in the mid-1980s in the campaign known as "rectification." You can also read more about this in the book "In Defense of Socialism," a collection of Fidel's speeches from the late 1980s.

Painting People in Watercolor: A Design Approach
Published in Hardcover by Watson-Guptill Pubns (May, 1989)
Author: Alex Powers
Average review score:

Brilliant!
This book is one of the indispensable ones - you have got to have it! Don't let the painting on the cover put you off (I think it is one of the weakest paintings!) Between the covers, where it counts, this book is great.

Powers has the incredible ability to paint something perfectly while making it look like it took him a few minutes. His vision is unique. To some, his work may appear messy or unfinished, but for me this is a genius at work. His paintings look simple, but it's what he leaves out that often makes his work utterly remarkable.

His concise and easy-to-understand notes on facial proportions and his analysis of elements of his technique, such as composition, design, colour, line, and shape, make for fascinating reading. Seeing the mark of the artist has always been compelling for me. Here I see it in every painting. I often refer to Powers' methods to teach my art workshops for adult students.

This is my desert island book - the book with which I would choose to be marooned. If there were a six-star rating, this book would get it. Why are you still reading? BUY IT! NOW!

The power behind portrait techniques
This is such an immensely informative book with an incredible range of effective techniques and written in such an inspirational way. The next step must be to attend an Alex Powers workshop - anybody out there that can help me?

Alex Powers, MY HERO
I have been reading and re-reading this book since December 1997. I have always had the desire to paint but never picked up a paintbrush because realistic painting did not leave me inspired to follow. The painting style that Alex Powers has in his work is what I have been searching for all my life. In writing about his personal style he encourages his readers to find their own style. I picked this book up several different times over a two week period before I finally bought it. I would love to attend a class that he teaches.

The Peacemaking Power of Prayer: Equipping Christians to Transform the World
Published in Paperback by Broadman & Holman Publishers (15 May, 2000)
Authors: John D. Robb and Jim Hill
Average review score:

The Peacemaking Power of Prayer
As a Senior Pastor, I'm always on the look out for a book that can enhance my own personal prayer life, as well as those in my congregation. This is definitely the book! A "must read"! Not only does the book give practical "how-to's," but exhaustive illustrations as to how prayer can affect and change our lives, the lives of others, and even nations! I agree with Franklin Graham's review, the book "will challenge you to take seriously the spritual battle raging in the world around us..." Dr. Hill and John Robb have offered the world (particularly the Church) some wonderful tools to help us change our lives and this world through prayer. Thank you both very much! (I'll be using this book as the primary study material to enhance our staff's prayer life at our next annual Staff Retreat)

A spouse's perspective
Having watched the development of this book, "The Peacemaking Power of Prayer" from the day Jim came home from Bosnia, all through his collaborations with his co-author, John Robb, there is a single foundational principle that re-occurs to me time after time: Prayer Changes Things. We have seen this over and over in our personal lives, and it comes through loud and clear in the book. "The Peacemaking Power of Prayer" will clearly demonstrate that not only is God interested in our individual lives, but He is interested in country-level issues as well. He tells us that if we humble ourselves and pray and seek His face that He will hear from heaven and heal our lands (2 Chron 7:14); and this book chronicles this in such countries as Bosnia, Cambodia, Rwanda, and Kosovo. It is a book which will encourage your hearts while also challenging your individual understanding of this mystery called prayer. Jim and John offer practical ways to come together and pray for countries and nationalities, and I know these principles work, for I have seen the results. Please consider reading through this book to further your understanding on what prayer is, and how the Lord uses it to accomplish His purposes. You will be glad you did.

Prayer
The book "The Peacemaking Power of Prayer" is a call for all Christians to take a serious look at the wonderful gift of prayer. We seem to take for granted the opportunity to speak to the Creator and Sustainer of the universe over the everyday issues of life when we should be on our knees interceding for those whose lives are anything but everyday. What an eye opening glimpse at our responsibility and privilege to seek peace and restoration for people in countries so torn apart by years of hate and distrust. This book not only can be applied to countries in strife but individual lives that are torn apart and hurting. The simple yet powerful act of praying for God's intervention and healing is incredible. It is hard to believe and yet here is a book that chronicles that very thing. A must reading for anyone who wants to take an active part in peacemaking and needs encouragement to know that each individual has a voice with God.
